Genesis 12 Part I: Following God

3 steps of Abraham's callingJehovah called Abram out of his land and his relatives.  Abram answered God’s calling eventually, but it required a long process because Abram was not that willing.

We see three times when God called Abram:

  1. The first calling was while Abram was still in Chaldea. In Gen 11:31 we see that Abram’s dad moved them in response, but they only made it to Haran.
  2. After Abram’s father died, there was a 2nd calling in Genesis 12:1, and Abram moved to Canaan. According to Acts 7:4, actually God “removed him” from Haran into Canaan.
  3. The third calling occurred while Abram was in Canaan (Genesis 12:7). This calling came with God’s promise to bless Abram.

As we see here, it’s a process in one’s life to follow God.  At first we may not even want to, like Abraham, but God calls us and will keep calling us.  As God’s called ones who are desiring to follow Him, we can trust in His faithfulness to bring us to the point where we need to be.
