Genesis 12 Part II: An Altar and a Tent

After Abraham reached the good land, God appeared to him for the 3rd time.  At this point Abraham built an altar to God (Gen. 12:7b). The altar represents our giving our all to the Lord and is our testimony of God to the world. At this altar we get our strength to follow God, since it is where God appears to us. We get motivated, infused, and encouraged here. As human we are weak and need God to continue in His path.

We should also remember that, as Abraham was, we are foreigners in this world. In Hebrews 11:9 it says, “By faith he dwelt as a foreigner in the land of promise as in a foreign land, making his home in tents with Isaac and Jacob…” The tent here symbolizes how we aren’t settled in this world, and how when it is God’s will, we should be on the move.
