The Common Faith — Christ’s Crucifixion

Christ died on the cross for our sins, shedding His blood for our redemption.

The Lord's crucifixion was neither a small nor simple event. When Christ died on the cross, He accomplished a work much greater than the work of creation. He died an all-inclusive death with a five-fold status, fully completing the work of redemption, terminating every negative thing in the universe, and reopening the way for God to carry out His ultimate desire of dispensing Himself into man.

These are the five statuses in which Christ died:

I. THE LAMB OF GOD

John 1:29b …Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

  • Jesus’ first status on the cross was as the Lamb of God. As such a lamb, Jesus offered Himself once for all for the forgiveness of all. By believing in the Lord Jesus, we are completely forgiven of our sins and are freed from God's penalty of death!
  • Although sinning can frustrate our fellowship with the Lord, because Christ died for us, God must righteously forgive us of all our sins when we confess them (1 John 1:9).

II. The Brass Serpent

John 3:14  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  • As the brass serpent, Christ died on the cross to destroy the old serpent, Satan, the Devil (Heb. 2:14). When Christ destroyed Satan, He also crucified the flesh with its sinful nature and the world with its satanic system.
  • Whenever our flesh or the world tries to draw us away from Christ, we can be saved by turning to our spirit. We can do this by calling on His name, and the Spirit in our spirit is activated to put to death the practices of our body (1 Cor 12:3, Rom. 8:13)

III. THE LAST ADAM

1 Corinthians 15:45b …the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit.

  • When God created Adam, He intended for man to take Him in as life to express Him. However, Adam failed God to the uttermost, taking in and expressing Satan. God had to terminate the first Adam and all of Adam's race through Christ's crucifixion. God could then start a new race with Christ as its Head in resurrection.

IV. THE PEACEMAKER

Eph. 2:16  And might reconcile both in one Body to God through the cross, having slain the enmity by it.

  • God wanted man to express Him in oneness, but man became separated into many races, nationalities, and classes, with much hatred and fighting among these groups. When Christ died as the peacemaker He crossed out all our differences. And actually, we all died in Christ. Now when we turn to our spirit and allow the cross to operate, we can truly be one.

V. THE GRAIN OF WHEAT

John 12:24  Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it abides alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

  • The life of a grain of wheat is hidden inside its outer shell. When the grain falls into the ground, the shell breaks and the life inside is released. In the same way, Christ's divine life was contained and concealed within the "shell" of His body. His death on the cross broke that shell so that His divine life could be released. His life was released so it could get into us! When we believed and called on the Lord Jesus, He came into us and we became His multiplication, the many grains!
